How to choose

Order the sand by the filter design: grading (range in mm or mesh), effective size and uniformity coefficient.
New bed: build from the bottom up, from coarsest to finest grain, levelling each layer before the next.
Before putting the filter into service, backwash until the water runs clear: it removes the fine dust from the charge.
Store the bags covered and on pallets: wet sand weighs more and cakes.

Frequently asked questions

How does it differ from 20 x 40 sand?

The grain is about twice as large. It filters less finely but takes more solids load and more flow, so it is used in upflow filters, raw water and transition layers. The polishing layer of a treatment plant is still 20 x 40.

Can it be used in a drip irrigation filter?

Yes, it is the usual range for irrigation sand filters. Check the mesh specified by the filter manufacturer.
