How to choose

Order the sand by the filter design: grading (range in mm or mesh), effective size and uniformity coefficient.
New bed: build from the bottom up, from coarsest to finest grain, levelling each layer before the next.
Before putting the filter into service, backwash until the water runs clear: it removes the fine dust from the charge.
Store the bags covered and on pallets: wet sand weighs more and cakes.

Frequently asked questions

Does 4 x 8 grit replace the gravel?

Not entirely. It is the first support layer, right below the sand. Underneath, the design usually calls for coarser gravel in three or four ranges up to 38 mm*, depending on the filter bottom.

Can it be used as a water well pre-filter?

Yes. It is the usual pre-filter range between the screen pipe and the well wall. Check the screen slot opening with the well design.
