How to choose

Order the sand by the filter design: grading (range in mm or mesh), effective size and uniformity coefficient.
New bed: build from the bottom up, from coarsest to finest grain, levelling each layer before the next.
Before putting the filter into service, backwash until the water runs clear: it removes the fine dust from the charge.
Store the bags covered and on pallets: wet sand weighs more and cakes.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this layer go in the filter?

Just below the filter sand and above the coarser support (4 x 8 and gravel). In a downflow filter the layer is usually 7 to 10 cm*; in an upflow filter it is thicker, as per the design.

Do I need it if my filter has strainers?

It depends on the strainer opening. If the slot is smaller than the filter sand grain, the manufacturer may waive the support. Check the filter specification.
